Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has signalled the end of his long career as a professional footballer. The captain of the Portugal national team has hinted that 2026 could be his final year active in football, after more than two decades competing in the sport.

Ronaldo revealed this possibility during an interview with Vogue. This statement is the latest public indication regarding the 41-year-old player's future plans.

"That could very well end up being my final year in professional football," Ronaldo stated to Vogue, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on Sunday.

Ronaldo explained that he has been reflecting on the legacy he will leave ever since he made his senior debut for Sporting CP back in 2002.

"I have already planned out my future. I want to leave behind an extraordinary legacy," he continued.

2026 World Cup Confirmed As His Final Tournament

Before hinting at a potential 2026 retirement, Ronaldo had already confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his last appearance at football's biggest global tournament.

"I believe this will be my final World Cup. But let us all hope that tomorrow will not be my last ever match," Ronaldo said ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 fixture against Spain.

Portugal's tournament run ultimately ended after they were eliminated by Spain, who went on to win the 2026 World Cup title.

Ronaldo exited the tournament with 3 goals to his name. He scored twice during Portugal's group stage match against Uzbekistan, before adding another goal from a penalty kick against Croatia in the Round of 32.

The goal against Croatia marked Cristiano Ronaldo's first ever goal in a World Cup knockout stage match.

Ronaldo's Records Remain Nearly Unmatched

Should he officially retire in the near future, Ronaldo will leave behind an unprecedented statistical legacy. He holds the all-time records for both total appearances and total goals for the Portugal men's national team.

Ronaldo has represented Portugal 232 times, scoring 146 international goals. This figure places him among the most prolific players in the entire history of international football.

At club level, his achievements are equally remarkable. Ronaldo has played over 1,300 official club matches and scored 976 career club goals.

One personal milestone still remains within reach: hitting 1000 career club goals. With his current tally, this landmark is only 24 goals away.

33 Club Titles And International Honours With Portugal

Ronaldo's career has been decorated with dozens of major trophies. He has won 33 club honours across spells with Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr.

On the international stage, Ronaldo delivered Portugal the Euro 2016 title. He also led his country to win the UEFA Nations League tournament in both 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo's legacy extends far beyond goals and trophies. He has become the defining icon of his generation of Portuguese football, and one of the most influential athletes in the history of modern sport.

Now, over 20 years on from his senior professional debut, Ronaldo has begun speaking openly about what comes after his playing career ends.

The indications of a 2026 retirement do not mean a final decision has been formalised. However, for the first time, one of the greatest footballers of all time has publicly acknowledged that the end of his career is drawing steadily closer.

Should 2026 indeed prove to be Ronaldo's final active season, global football will soon be witnessing the end of an entire era.
