Indonesia has two representatives in the men's singles round of 16 at the 2026 BWF World Championships. Both Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan successfully advanced past the round of 32 stage held in New Delhi, India.

Jonatan was forced to battle through three full games to eliminate Singapore's representative Jia Heng Jason Teh. Meanwhile Alwi put on a dominant performance, defeating Finland's Joakim Oldorff in straight two games.

Jonatan Christie Mounts Comeback After Dropping First Game

The third seeded Jonatan found himself in a tough position after Jason took the first game 21-19.

The 28 year old athlete admitted he had not been able to stay calm early in the match, which prevented him from executing his pre-prepared game plan properly.

"At the start of the match I was still too tense, a little panicked, and lacked confidence to run the strategy we had prepared. I was second guessing every shot right up until the middle of the first game," stated Jojo, his popular nickname, in an official PBSI press release.

Jojo rallied in the second game and built a very comfortable lead at 20-14, before Jason mounted a fierce fightback to claim five consecutive points, closing the gap to 19-20.

Jojo eventually secured the final point to take the second game 21-19.

"When I was up 20-14, I thought my opponent would let this game go and prepare for the decider instead. It turned out he kept fighting hard and changed his playing pattern. I got a little panicked again, but fortunately I managed to close out that game properly," he added.

Entering the deciding third game, Jonatan played with far more confidence. He successfully read Jason's playing patterns and took full control of the match, closing out the decider with a convincing 21-11 win.

Jonatan progresses to the round of 16 with a final scoreline of 19-21, 21-19, 21-11.

"Badminton is not like mathematics. What you learn from a previous match will not always work exactly the same way in the next one. There are so many variables that can change, from physical condition to your mental state when you step on court," Jonatan remarked.

Alwi Farhan Refuses To Get Complacent

Alwi Farhan advanced through the round of 32 in very different fashion. The Indonesian men's singles player brushed aside Joakim Oldorff with a score of 21-12, 21-9.

This marks Alwi's second consecutive straight games victory at the 2026 BWF World Championships. Previously, he defeated South Korea's Yoo Tae Bin 21-17, 21-12 in the opening round of the tournament.

"For me, every single match is a test of how I respond. There are no easy matches at the World Championships, every player here is competing to get the best possible result," Alwi said.

Alwi is choosing to maintain his focus one match at a time. He is aiming to perform at his full ability every time he plays, without getting ahead of himself thinking about the final tournament outcome.

Against Oldorff, Alwi successfully adapted to the European player's characteristic playing style, which follows different patterns compared to most Asian players.

"My opponent had a slightly different, quite tricky playing pattern, but I had already prepared for that. The one day rest break also helped my recovery a lot, so I was in good physical condition for this match," he concluded.
