Indonesia's diverse range of destinations, culture, cuisine and varied travel experiences are among the core reasons travellers select the country as a destination for their future trips.
Indonesia recorded 15.39 million international tourist arrivals throughout 2025 according to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS). This figure provides a broad snapshot of Indonesia's tourism performance amid stiff competition between Asian travel destinations.
Within the Southeast Asian region, tourism competition is growing increasingly dynamic. Over the last two years, Malaysia has overtaken Thailand and retained its status as the country receiving the highest number of Foreign Tourist arrivals.
Malaysia's tourism growth is supported by multiple driving factors. More relaxed visa policies, infrastructure development, improved regional connectivity, and the hosting of various large-scale international events have all contributed to the rise in visitor numbers.
Malaysia even hit an all-time record of 42.2 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2025. This figure marked an 11.2 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Malaysia's appeal is not solely built on accessibility and infrastructure. Cultural diversity also forms a core part of the Travel Experience offered, spanning local community traditions through to the rich culinary heritage found across all its regions.
This strong performance has continued into 2026. In the first half of this year, Malaysia registered 21.12 million international tourist arrivals, representing 2.5 percent growth over the same period 12 months prior.
The Malaysian government is working to sustain this momentum by intensifying promotional activities in key source markets. China, Indonesia, Japan and India have been prioritised as target markets delivering positive growth results.
This strategy reflects that tourism competition across Southeast Asia is increasingly centred around both high-quality travel experiences and ease of access.
Nations in this region are not only competing to attract first-time visitors, but also working to deliver distinct, memorable travel experiences that encourage guests to return for future trips.
Malaysia has specifically developed cuisine-focused tourism products as part of its strategy, including durian-themed tour packages that feature unlimited all-you-can-eat durian sessions.
Against this competitive landscape, Indonesia's placement inside Agoda's top 5 ranking is a notable milestone. Indonesia's 2025 international arrival figures demonstrate the scale of its national tourism market, while the repeat visit data underlines how critical positive travel experiences are for retaining long-term tourist interest.
For Indonesia, the next challenge is not just maintaining total arrival volumes, but ensuring travellers have compelling reasons to return. Destinations that can offer fresh, unique experiences on every visit will be a key asset for preserving Indonesia's standing in the Asian travel market.
