Manchester United and Chelsea both secured positive results on the second matchweek of the 2026/27 English Premier League. Manchester United put on a convincing display as they thrashed Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes was the star of the Red Devils' victory, netting a hat-trick on Sunday, 30 August 2026.

In another fixture, Chelsea had to battle through a dramatic full match before edging out Brighton & Hove Albion 4-3 at Stamford Bridge.

This result sees Manchester United move up to 10th place with 3 points. Ipswich also sit on 3 points, but rank one position below United at 12th in the table.

Bruno Fernandes Hat-Trick Fires United To Goal Fest Win

At Old Trafford, Manchester United finally registered their first league win of the season. The Red Devils side ended Ipswich Town's resistance with a resounding 5-2 scoreline.

Bruno Fernandes was the standout performer. The Manchester United captain scored three goals, with the remaining two coming from Bryan Mbeumo and an own goal by Jacob Greaves.

Ipswich briefly silenced the home crowd when Leif Davis put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute.

The goal originated from Fatawu's run down the left flank. He got past Luke Shaw before delivering a cross into the penalty area which was finished off by Davis.

Ipswich even had an opportunity to double their lead, but Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a sharp save to deny Davis.

Manchester United found their equaliser just before the end of the first half. An Ipswich defensive error was picked up by Matheus Cunha, who played a through ball into the path of Bruno Fernandes.

The captain made no mistake with the chance, firing a powerful strike past Peter Scherpen to level the score at 1-1.

Manchester United came out far more aggressively after the half time break. Just seven minutes into the second half, the home side took the lead.

Harry Maguire hit a low shot which deflected off Jacob Greaves, sending the ball looping into his own net.

The goal went through a VAR check following a suspected handball by Maguire. After review, the goal stood, putting United 2-1 ahead.

Manchester United extended their advantage when Matheus Cunha was fouled inside the penalty box. Bruno Fernandes stepped up as the designated penalty taker and converted the spot kick perfectly.

The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute. A loose ball that rebounded off an Ipswich defender dropped right to Fernandes, who struck it first time for his third goal of the match.

Manchester United continued to control the match comfortably. In the 82nd minute, Fernandes turned provider, laying on an assist for Bryan Mbeumo.

Running onto the through ball, Mbeumo produced a delicate lob finish from outside the penalty area. The ball nestled into the Ipswich goal, extending United's lead to 5-1.

Ipswich pulled one back during stoppage time. A mistake by Lisandro Martinez was capitalised on by Julio Enciso, who played the ball through to Chuba Akpom.

Akpom made no mistake with the chance, reducing the deficit to 5-2.

No further goals were scored before the final whistle. Manchester United secured their first 2026/27 Premier League victory, taking all three points from their home fixture.

Chelsea Kick Off Campaign In High Scoring Thriller

Chelsea applied pressure right from kick off. After just four minutes, Romeo Lavia put The Blues ahead, capitalising on poor defensive coordination from Brighton during a corner kick.

Chelsea's pressure paid off once again in the 14th minute. Pedro Neto finished off a cutback pass from Morgan Rogers, doubling the home side's advantage to 2-0.

This match also marked Emiliano Martinez's debut for Chelsea. The Argentine goalkeeper, recently signed from Aston Villa, was immediately handed the starting spot between the sticks by Xabi Alonso.

Martinez was not only busy protecting his goal. He regularly helped build Chelsea's attacks with long distribution passes, one of which was played up to Joao Pedro.

Chelsea extended their lead further in the 32nd minute. Joao Pedro converted on a counter attack to get his name on the scoresheet, putting the home side three goals clear.

Brighton responded quickly. Just three minutes later, Malick Junior Yalcouye pounced on a rebound after Emiliano Martinez had parried Charalampos Kostoulas' initial effort.

The 3-1 scoreline remained until the half time break.

After the restart, Brighton came out with increased intensity and pulled another goal back in the 63rd minute. Joao Pedro inadvertently turned Pascal Gross' shot past Martinez for an own goal.

Brighton grew in confidence after cutting the gap to 3-2, but Chelsea managed to regain momentum and extend their lead once again.

In the 84th minute, Cole Palmer unleashed a strike from outside the penalty area. The shot flew past Bart Verbruggen to restore Chelsea's two goal advantage.

Brighton kept pushing right until the final moments of the match. Pascal Gross scored his second of the game in the 6th minute of stoppage time with a headed finish into the far left corner of the goal.

However, this goal was not enough to prevent Brighton from falling to defeat. Chelsea held on to their lead, closing out the match with a 4-3 victory.

This result continues Chelsea's early 2026/27 season trend of high scoring matches. On the opening matchweek, The Blues had also claimed victory with a 3-2 win over Fulham.
