Arsenal faced Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in the early hours of Thursday WIB. Playing on away soil, Mikel Arteta's squad attempted to take control of the match right from the opening minutes.
The Gunners created their first chance in the 13th minute. Bukayo Saka received a pass from Viktor Gyokeres before firing a shot that was still safely held by Alex Meret.
Napoli responded just two minutes later with a strike from Kevin De Bruyne outside the penalty area, which was parried by David Raya before Ben White cleared the ball away from the dangerous zone.
Arsenal threatened again in the 22nd minute through Mikel Merino, then once more via Saka shortly before half time, but neither opportunity produced a goal. The first half ended goalless.
Arteta made substitutions at the start of the second half, including bringing on Christos Tzolis.
In the 75th minute, Tzolis provided an assist that was finished cleanly by Martin Odegaard, putting Arsenal ahead 1-0.
Arsenal nearly extended their lead eight minutes later. Tzolis found himself with an opportunity on the rebound from Noni Madueke's shot, but his final attempt missed the target.
Napoli ramped up pressure in the closing minutes. De Bruyne tried his luck again in the 88th minute, but his shot drifted wide.
No further goals were scored before the full time whistle. Arsenal returned home with a 1-0 victory and all three points from Napoli's stadium.
Liverpool Fight Back At Anfield
Playing at their Anfield home, Liverpool found themselves in a difficult position after Atletico Madrid scored first, before The Reds turned the match around to secure a 2-1 win.
Liverpool created an immediate threat just one minute into the match through Alexander Isak, though his effort went wide.
Atletico responded via Julian Alvarez, with the Argentine striker's shot still safely saved by Alisson Becker.
Los Rojiblancos opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Alvarez played a through ball that found Marcos Llorente, who had successfully beaten the offside trap.
Llorente carried the ball into the penalty area before firing past Alisson, putting Atletico 1-0 up.
Liverpool increased pressure after falling behind. Atletico threatened on the counter attack in the 27th minute, though Alvarez's chance was denied once again by Alisson.
Liverpool scored an equaliser five minutes before half time, with Dominik Szoboszlai finishing a clever backheel pass from Araujo inside the penalty box.
The goal was reviewed by VAR for a potential offside call before being confirmed valid, bringing Liverpool level at 1-1.
The Reds did not take long to take the lead after half time. In the 50th minute, a clearance from an Atletico defender fell straight to Alexis Mac Allister.
The Argentine midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, which flew past Jan Oblak to make the score 2-1 for Liverpool.
Atletico pushed to draw level. Alvarez got another chance in the 69th minute, but his shot went directly into Alisson's gloves.
Atletico then brought on Ademola Lookman, Jonathan David and Morten Hjulmand to boost their attacking threat. However, no further goals were scored for the rest of the match. Liverpool held their 2-1 lead to open their 2026/27 Champions League campaign with a victory.
