Ongoing Eruptions of Anak Krakatau Have Ended, Tourists Are Urged to Stay Away From the Active Crater

Jakarta - The continuous eruption episode of Anak Krakatau Volcano in the Sunda Strait has ended after lasting approximately 25 hours. Although this activity has subsided, the Geological Agency still assesses that the potential for follow-up eruptions in the upcoming period remains considerably high.

Head of the Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Lana Saria confirmed the continuous eruption episode started on Friday (4/9) at 23:07 WIB and concluded on Sunday (6/9) at 00:04 WIB.

"After this episode ended, volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau has transitioned back to typical Strombolian eruption characteristics, marked by detection of three separate Strombolian eruption seismic events," Lana stated in the official Anak Krakatau activity evaluation report received in Jakarta on Monday, 07 September 2026.

Per the Geological Agency, the return of activity to Strombolian eruption patterns confirms the end of this prolonged continuous eruption phase. However, this status does not mean volcanic activity is fully safe, as the probability of subsequent eruptions remains elevated.

Volcanic Activity Remains Detected

Based on instrumental monitoring between 6-7 September 2026, the Geological Agency recorded 3 eruption earthquakes, 9 gas emission earthquakes, 93 low-frequency earthquakes, 98 hybrid/multi-phase earthquakes, 4 sustained tremor events, and 1 shallow volcanic earthquake.

The RSAM (Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement) averaged amplitude graph, which surged sharply on 5 September 2026, has shown a consistent downward trend starting 6 September.

Meanwhile, tiltmeter deformation data from Tanjung Station indicates minor inflation occurring since early August 2026, while readings from Lava93 Station show relatively stable patterns.

Following this assessment, the Geological Agency will maintain Anak Krakatau Volcano's activity status at Level III (Alert).

Visitors Advised To Stay Clear Of The Crater

This situation requires attention from local residents and visitors active around the Sunda Strait. The Geological Agency issued a recommendation that tourists, hikers, and local communities must not approach or conduct activities within a 3 kilometre radius of the active crater.

This restriction is enforced to mitigate volcanic hazards including incandescent rock ejecta, pyroclastic flows, lava streams, and heavy volcanic ash fall.

For tourists planning travel or recreational activities around the Sunda Strait region, updates on Anak Krakatau's status should be treated as a primary safety consideration. All tourism activities must also comply with safety regulations and official guidance from responsible authorities.

Quoted from ANTARA news agency, the Geological Agency also urged coastal residents of Banten and Lampung to remain calm and disregard circulating hoax information regarding tsunami risks from this eruption.
