Masters Opens Pathway for International Golfers Through 6 National Tournaments

Augusta National will once again utilise six national tournaments as official qualification pathways for the Masters. Tournament organisers will revert to relying on The R&A's Open Qualifying Series (OQS) to define the events included in this qualification route.

This policy restores the previous eligibility criteria, which grants automatic invitations to the winners of six national open championships held across different countries. Under this mechanism, any golfer that claims victory at one of the selected tournaments will earn a place in the Masters field.

Last year, The R&A confirmed 15 tournaments within the Open Qualifying Series. This roster includes 12 national open championships, featuring events from multiple global professional golf tours. Players who record high finishes and have not already secured exemption for The Open are considered for qualification through this series.

For the Masters however, only the outright winners of six national tournaments that also form part of the Open Qualifying Series will receive invitations. These six events are the Scottish Open, Spanish Open, Japan Open, Hong Kong Open, Australian Open and South African Open.

Tom Kim is one player who has already benefitted from this pathway. The South Korean golfer won the Scottish Open last July, and in doing so had already secured his spot at the upcoming Masters next April. Kim also holds alternate qualification after progressing to the PGA Tour Championship.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley confirmed this decision aligns with the tournament's longstanding heritage of welcoming competitors from all nations.

"The Masters Tournament has a long history of featuring international competitors, so we welcome this opportunity to highlight the truly global nature of the game of golf," Ridley stated in an official press release.

"This announcement reinforces our shared commitment with The R&A to create accessible pathways for players across every region of the world to earn their place at both the Masters and The Open," he added.

The reinstatement of this system grants major competitive significance to these six national tournaments for all golfers targeting a Masters appearance, with no special exemptions. A winning performance at any one of these events will secure direct entry to Augusta National.

Of the six tournaments listed under this criteria, five will be staged during the autumn season. The South African Open meanwhile is scheduled for March next year.

Implementation of this system means Masters qualification will no longer be restricted exclusively to events held in the United States. International golfers will now have a clear opportunity to lock in their spot at Augusta National via these national Open Qualifying Series events.

This policy also further strengthens the formal partnership between the Masters and The R&A to develop fair qualification routes for golfers from every part of the world.

Results from these six tournaments will form one of the core determining factors for the final Masters field. (ESPN)
