Presidents Cup 2026: Wyndham Clark Complains About the Spectator Atmosphere in Chicago

Wyndham Clark has stated that the spectator atmosphere at Chicago's Medinah Country Club has not been lively enough for the 2026 Presidents Cup. The United States golfer even described the tournament's opening day mood as "rather flat", and called for more enthusiastic support from fans as Team USA competes through the Weekend.

While it is widely accepted that Presidents Cup crowd intensity will never match the Ryder Cup, Clark admitted he was shocked by the muted reaction from home supporters.

"It felt pretty dead out there," stated Clark.

"Honestly we could have had much better momentum. We just weren't feeling that usual backing and energy from the fans that we normally get," he added.

These remarks received a response from United States team captain Brandt Snedeker. He agreed with Clark's assessment, noting that the level of spectator support was highly unusual.

"I can confirm all the fans showed up, they were present. But only the first tee was loud, after that the energy just fizzled out as the day progressed," Snedeker said.

"I don't know exactly why. I believe one factor is that the course is playing very difficult right now. Many pin positions are also tricky, so it's hard to pull off consistent birdies that fire up both players and crowds. On top of that, several holes have restricted viewing lines, so spectators cannot properly follow the action on the course," he continued.

The historic lopsided dominance of the United States over the International team at the Presidents Cup was also named as a contributing factor. Team USA holds an overwhelming record in the competition, having only suffered defeat on one single occasion.

Both Clark and Snedeker are hoping Medinah crowds will deliver far more energetic support when play resumes for the foursomes sessions.

Clark even issued a direct open challenge to United States supporters.

"I'm saying this as a challenge, plain and simple. Hopefully tomorrow and for the rest of the weekend, the fans properly show up to back us. No matter How things unfold, we need that momentum behind us," Clark stated.

Snedeker also expressed confidence that the famous passionate character of Chicago crowds will emerge over the coming match days.

"I know Chicago. I know what our local fans are capable of. They will turn up tomorrow. We just need to go out there and play solid golf," said Snedeker.

For both Clark and Snedeker, strong crowd backing is viewed as a critical part of Team USA's efforts to hold their competitive momentum. (ESPN)
