Arsenal kicked off the 2026/27 season in extremely convincing fashion. The reigning Premier League champions crushed Manchester City 3-0 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Sunday, 16 August 2026, to lift the Community Shield while sending a powerful warning message to all their rivals.
This victory was far more than just another trophy added to Arsenal's cabinet. The manner in which they dismantled City proves that Mikel Arteta's squad is fully prepared to defend their Premier League crown and challenge for every other available honour this season.
Arsenal took the lead after just 23 seconds. Myles Lewis-Skelly played a piercing through ball to Riccardo Calafiori, who beat Gianluigi Donnarumma to put Arsenal 1-0 up.

This goal ranks as one of the fastest ever scored in Community Shield history, and immediately handed Arsenal massive momentum right from the first whistle.
City attempted to respond, but Arsenal proved far more clinical with their chances in the final third. In the 28th minute, Martin Odegaard floated a cross to the far post, which Christos Tzolis laid off perfectly into Kai Havertz's path.
Havertz struck a low bouncing header that beat Donnarumma, leaving the goalkeeper picking the ball out of his net once again. Arsenal went into the half time break holding a comfortable 2-0 lead.
City denied Arsenal a third goal before the break thanks to a last-ditch goal line clearance from Joško Gvardiol. However, Arsenal's relentless pressure yielded another goal shortly after the second half got underway.
Tzolis was once again at the heart of the action. The summer signing from FC Twente provided his second assist of the match, teeing up Odegaard who sold City's defenders with a clever feint before firing past the keeper in the 48th minute.
The 3-0 scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.
With two assists on his competitive debut for the club, Tzolis emerged as one of the standout performers of the match. The Greek international was involved in all three of Arsenal's goals, marking an almost perfect start to his career with the Gunners.
Arteta also handed Bruno Guimaraes his full competitive debut, naming the Brazilian midfielder in his starting line-up. Guimaraes played the entire first half, before being replaced by Declan Rice at the interval.
Arteta expressed his satisfaction with his team's performance. The Spanish head coach stated that this fixture against City was a crucial benchmark to assess Arsenal's readiness ahead of the new domestic campaign.
This result marks a tough opening to competitive management for Enzo Maresca. This match was Maresca's first official game in charge of Manchester City, following the end of Pep Guardiola's tenure at the club.
For Arsenal, this performance demonstrated that last season's success was not just a one-off purple patch. The club have strengthened their squad with signings such as Tzolis and Guimaraes, while Odegaard once again proved he is one of the driving forces behind this side.
Arsenal are well aware that winning the Community Shield does not guarantee Premier League glory come the end of the season. Even so, this dominant victory over one of their closest title rivals sends an unmistakable statement that cannot be ignored.
The Gunners have already lifted their first silverware of the campaign. Now they face a far greater challenge: retaining their Premier League title, and pushing for Champions League success after falling short in the competition last season.
Arsenal will open their Premier League campaign at the Emirates Stadium against Coventry City, with the match kicking off on Friday 21 August local time, or 02.00 WIB on Saturday 22 August.
If this Community Shield display is any indication of what is to come, Arsenal have sent a very clear message to the rest of the league: they have not arrived this season simply to defend their title - they are here to compete for and win every trophy available.
