Rodri Returns to Spain After Seven Years
Rodri departs Manchester City after spending seven full seasons with the English club.
He originally joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, and went on to establish himself as one of the most pivotal players during the club's historic successful era under Pep Guardiola.
Across his spell at Manchester City, Rodri made 298 senior appearances and helped the club lift 14 major trophies.
Four of those honours were Premier League titles. Rodri was also the central figure in Manchester City's first ever UEFA Champions League triumph in 2023.
In the final against Inter Milan, Rodri scored the only goal of the match which secured the Champions League trophy for his side.
This standout performance also paved the way for him to claim the 2024 Ballon d'Or award.
Rodri Joins Barcelona As A Reigning World Champion
Rodri's impressive track record with the Spanish national team further adds to the significance of this transfer.
Rodri was a core part of the Spain squad that won the 2024 European Championship. Two years later, he repeated this success by leading Spain to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy.
For his outstanding performances throughout the tournament, Rodri was awarded the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball as the competition's best player.
He now brings all this elite level experience to his new club Barcelona.
Rodri has stated he is thrilled to begin this new chapter of his career, and is looking forward to rediscovering the joy of football in this fresh challenge.
"I am extremely happy and excited for this new stage in my career. This is a brand new challenge, a chance to experience new things and feel that special joy of football once again," Rodri commented.
He also expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to work under head coach Hansi Flick.
Rodri explained that Flick's distinct playing philosophy, different from all systems he has previously worked under, will help him continue to develop as a player.
Barcelona Beat Real Madrid In Transfer Race
Rodri's move to Barcelona brings an end to a months-long transfer saga surrounding the player.
Real Madrid had long been heavily linked with signing the Spanish midfielder, however Barcelona moved decisively and finalised terms to secure his signature.
Barcelona had initially submitted an opening offer of around 38.5 million pounds to Manchester City, which was promptly rejected.
Extended negotiations followed, before both clubs finally agreed on the substantially higher final transfer package.
Barcelona will ultimately acquire Rodri for the total potential fee of 76.5 million euros.
For Barcelona, this signing represents far more than just adding an experienced player to their squad.
Rodri brings elite ball retention quality, unmatched match tempo control, and proven experience performing at the very highest level of the sport. His arrival is also expected to bring much needed additional balance to Barcelona's midfield line.
Rodri's Farewell Message To Manchester City
Ahead of officially completing his move to Barcelona, Rodri released a farewell message addressed to Manchester City and the club's supporters.
He leaves the club with immense pride for everything they achieved together over seven years, and carries countless cherished memories from his time living and playing in Manchester.
Rodri also extended his gratitude to his former teammates, coaching staff, club personnel, and the fans who supported him throughout his career journey there.
"Everything we built and achieved together over all these years is something very special, it will never be forgotten," Rodri stated.
After seven years in England, Rodri is now returning home to Spain.
But he comes back with an entirely changed status: a reigning world champion, Ballon d'Or winner, and one of the most decorated midfielders of his entire generation.
Barcelona are hoping that all this winning experience and pedigree will help Rodri drive the club to further major success over the duration of his contract until 2030.
