Manchester City demonstrated their clinical edge on the second matchweek of the 2026/27 English Premier League. Playing at Selhurst Park in the early hours of WIB on Saturday 29 August 2026, Enzo Maresca's squad successfully swept aside Crystal Palace with a convincing 4-1 scoreline.

Erling Haaland was the standout star of The Citizens' victory, netting two goals. The remaining two strikes came from Rayan Cherki, while Palace only managed to get on the scoresheet via an own goal from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

This result sees Manchester City collect six points from their opening two matches. This perfect start has temporarily lifted them to the top of the Premier League table.

It was a very different story for Crystal Palace. This defeat marks their second consecutive negative result, leaving them pointless and propping up the foot of the league table, according to official Premier League data.

Haaland and Cherki Pull City Clear

Manchester City immediately set about controlling the match from the first whistle. Their pressure paid off in the 17th minute, when Haaland met a cross with a headed finish that sailed into the top left corner of Dean Henderson's goal.

After falling a goal behind, Crystal Palace attempted to raise their attacking intensity. Jorgen Strand Larsen and Tyrick Mitchell both threatened with aerial duels, but neither chance resulted in an equaliser.

City came close to extending their lead before half time. Rayan Cherki found space to fire off a shot after being played through on goal, but Henderson was equal to the effort.

Manchester City held their 1-0 advantage going into the half time break.

After the restart, Crystal Palace came out playing far more aggressively. However, this approach from the home side only opened up gaps for City to extend their lead.

In the 54th minute, Cherki showcased his individual skill as he dribbled through the Palace defence before firing a shot from inside the penalty area. The ball found the bottom left corner, putting City 2-0 up.

Palace responded immediately. Just two minutes later, Yeremy Pino's free kick struck the crossbar. The rebound bounced off Donnarumma's body and crossed the line into City's net.

This own goal reduced the deficit for Palace, making the score 1-2.

However, the home side's momentum was short lived. Just three minutes later, Cherki found the net once more with a powerful strike, extending City's lead to 3-1.

Haaland then rounded off City's scoring in the 84th minute. The Norwegian striker met a low cross inside the box with a fierce driven finish into the top left corner.

This goal was Haaland's second of the match, and sealed Manchester City's 4-1 victory.

Liverpool Held To Another Draw

Liverpool are still searching for their first win of the campaign after the second Premier League matchweek. Playing at Anfield on Saturday, The Reds were forced to settle for a point following a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

This result means Liverpool have now drawn both their opening fixtures, having also finished 2-2 against Newcastle United on matchweek one.

It was a tight, closely contested match which saw Nottingham Forest take the lead on two separate occasions. Dan Ndoye opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute, converting a cross from Morgan Gibbs-White.

Liverpool thought they had equalised through Florian Wirtz in the 32nd minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the match officials.

Forest came close to doubling their lead just before half time. Igor Jesus had a clear sight of goal, but Alisson Becker produced a good save to deny him.

Liverpool finally found their equaliser in the 60th minute. Alexander Isak met Cody Gakpo's delivery to level the score at 1-1.

Forest retook the lead after they were awarded a penalty following a foul by Alisson inside the penalty area. Morgan Gibbs-White stepped up and converted the spot kick perfectly, putting the visitors 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute.

Liverpool refused to give up. Their sustained pressure finally paid off eight minutes later.

Victor Munoz found the back of the net in the 82nd minute, making the score 2-2 once again.

Liverpool pushed hard for a winning goal in the remaining minutes, but no further goals came before the final whistle, meaning both sides walked away with a single point.

This result leaves Liverpool on two points from two matches, sitting in 10th place in the provisional league table. Nottingham Forest occupy 12th position with one point.

Tottenham Suffer Another Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult start to the season. Playing at their home ground, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Spurs were beaten 0-2 by Newcastle United on Sunday.

This is Tottenham's second consecutive defeat, having previously lost 0-3 to Brentford on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Tottenham did create a number of chances during the match. Mathys Tel went close with an effort on goal, but Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale produced a fine save.

Jan Paul van Hecke also had an opportunity, but the Dutch defender's header was once again caught safely by Ramsdale.

After a goalless first half, Newcastle began to find gaps in the home side's defence.

Anthony Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, latching onto a pass from Amar Dedic and finishing clinically to put Newcastle 1-0 up.

Ten minutes later, the visitors extended their lead. Yoane Wissa capitalised on an opportunity right in front of Tottenham's goal to score Newcastle's second of the afternoon.

Spurs continued to fight in an attempt to get back into the match. Omar Marmoush had a chance to pull one back, but Ramsdale was alert once again to keep Newcastle's clean sheet intact.

No reply came for Tottenham before the final whistle blew, confirming a 2-0 away victory for Newcastle United.
