MU Failed to Win Again, Cunha's Goal Saves the Red Devils at Fulham's Home Ground

Manchester United had to settle for taking home a single point after playing out a 1-1 draw against Fulham in the fifth matchweek of the 2026/27 English Premier League at Craven Cottage, Sunday 20 September 2026.

The Red Devils found themselves under pressure after Fulham took the lead in the second half courtesy of an own goal from Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United only managed to find a reply late in the match. Matheus Cunha scored in the 89th minute, rescuing his side from defeat.

This single point takes Manchester United's total to five points from five matches played. The Red Devils currently sit in 12th position in the provisional league standings.

Meanwhile, Fulham are still without a win, having only collected two points from their opening five games. The Cottagers remain in 19th place, inside the relegation zone.

Fulham applied immediate pressure right from the start of the match. In the 5th minute, Gonzalo Garcia was presented with an opportunity after receiving the ball just outside the penalty box.

Garcia fired a shot towards the Manchester United goal, but the ball drifted just wide of the left post.

United responded five minutes later. Lisandro Martinez attempted to convert a loose ball outside the penalty area, however Bernd Leno reacted quickly to snuff out the chance.

Manchester United created another good opportunity in the 25th minute. Bruno Fernandes drove into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful strike.

Unfortunately for United, Fernandes' effort crashed against the left post of Fulham's goal.

The home side threatened again five minutes later. Oscar Bobb found space inside the penalty box and fired off a shot, which also drifted wide of the left upright.

Manchester United came within inches of opening the scoring one minute later. Matheus Cunha tried his luck from outside the penalty area, only for his strike to hit the right post of Fulham's goal.

The second half began as a much tighter affair, with neither side able to craft any clear dangerous chances against the opposing defence.

Fulham finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute in unexpected fashion.

Alex Iwobi struck a well-placed shot that was parried by Senne Lammens. The ball then deflected off Lisandro Martinez's leg, changing direction completely before crossing the line into Manchester United's net, putting Fulham 1-0 up.

Manchester United immediately pushed to cancel out the deficit. In the 67th minute, Bryan Mbeumo found space to fire a shot from medium range.

He directed the ball towards the far left side of the goal, but Leno once again produced excellent reflexes to deny the chance.

Cunha threatened Fulham again in the 74th minute. The Brazilian forward received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and placed his shot towards the bottom right corner.

Once again however, Leno read the trajectory of the ball perfectly to make the save.

Manchester United's sustained pressure finally paid off in the 89th minute.

Patrick Dorgu played a pass into Cunha, who was positioned just on the edge of the penalty box. Cunha struck a shot that took a deflection off a Fulham defender.

This deflection changed the path of the ball completely, wrongfooting Leno before it nestled into the Fulham net, levelling the score at 1-1.

No further goals were scored in the remaining time. Manchester United had to settle for sharing the points with Fulham as the match at Craven Cottage finished with the final score 1-1.
