Malang ranks in first place as the most favoured domestic travel destination for Indonesian tourists throughout the second quarter of 2026. According to data from the Traveloka SEA Index, Malang's popularity is driven by a combination of relatively affordable travel costs, rich natural environments, plus its cultural and culinary appeal.
This ranking was compiled using two indicators. Alongside search volume, booking volume was also measured to identify destinations that recorded the highest number of confirmed reservations.
All data used was sourced from bookings made via Traveloka for the period 1 April through 30 June 2026.

1. Malang, East Java
Malang holds the top position as Indonesian tourists' favourite domestic destination. This city recorded the highest growth rate across Indonesia's domestic travel market.
Relatively low travel costs stand as one of its core attractions. This factor paired with cool mountain air, highland landscapes, living cultural heritage, and wide variety of local cuisine makes Malang suitable for every type of trip.
Tourists may visit Jatim Park 1, 2 and 3, the Transportation Museum, right through to Balekambang Beach. For travellers who enjoy mountain scenery, the greater Malang area also serves as one of the official access gateways to Mount Bromo.
Malang's popularity reflects that domestic tourists are increasingly prioritising destinations that deliver varied experiences without requiring excessively high travel expenditure.
2. Bandung, West Java
Bandung takes second place on the list of Indonesia's most popular domestic travel destinations.
Relatively easy access from multiple major cities, affordable travel costs, plus the winning combination of culinary and shopping attractions make Bandung a leading choice for short trips.
It also offers a diverse range of visitor sites. Tourists can explore White Crater and Tangkuban Perahu volcano, then continue for family outings to Lembang Farmhouse, The Great Asia Africa, or Dusun Bambu.
For visitors wishing to experience the city's iconic urban landmarks, the Braga District and Gedung Sate remain consistently popular destinations.
With its balanced blend of nature, food, shopping and cultural experiences, Bandung remains a reliable option for a quick getaway.
3. Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta ranks third. This city retains its enduring appeal through a well-rounded mix of culture, history, cuisine, and travel costs that remain budget-friendly for domestic visitors.
Yogyakarta Royal Palace and Prambanan Temple are top picks for tourists seeking to learn local history and culture. Meanwhile those chasing nature experiences can visit Parangtritis Beach, Pindul Cave, and Mangunan Pine Forest.
Among all available attractions, Malioboro remains one of Yogyakarta's biggest draws. This district offers the unique authentic atmosphere of the city, alongside easy access to a huge range of local food, souvenir centres, and public gathering spaces.
Yogyakarta demonstrates that strong cultural identity remains one of the primary reasons Indonesian travellers choose domestic trips.
4. Semarang, Central Java
Semarang places fourth. This city has recorded strong growth alongside rising tourist interest in urban destinations with deep historical heritage and distinct culinary offerings.
The Old Town district stands as one of its main attractions, followed by Lawang Sewu and Sam Poo Kong Temple. All three sites deliver an immersive historical experience of Semarang.
Beyond urban tourist sites, Semarang also offers natural destinations including Brown Canyon and Umbul Sidomukti highland springs.
Semarang's growth also indicates that domestic tourists are expanding their travel choices, seeking out cities that offer unique authentic experiences instead of only visiting mainstream headline tourist hubs.
5. Palembang, South Sumatra
Palembang completes the top five most favoured domestic travel destinations for Indonesian tourists.
Situated along the banks of the Musi River, this city offers a combination of history, culture, cuisine and riverside urban landscapes. The Ampera Bridge is an iconic landmark that appears on almost every visitor's itinerary.
Aside from enjoying views over the Musi River, tourists may also visit Kuto Besak Fortress, plus various cultural and religious sites spread across the city.
Relatively affordable travel costs are one of the key factors that keep Palembang attractive for domestic travellers.
Growing Diversity In Domestic Travel
These five destinations demonstrate that travel preferences among Indonesian tourists are becoming increasingly diverse. Malang and Bandung offer ease of access plus a mix of natural and urban experiences, while Yogyakarta stands out for its culture, Semarang for history and cuisine, and Palembang for the Musi River and its cultural heritage.
The popularity of these destinations confirms that tourists now prioritise the quality and value of the experience they will receive, rather than just the general fame of a city.
