Eredivisie: Nathan Tjoe-A-On started the match as Willem II were defeated by Excelsior.

Nathan Tjoe-A-On was trusted to start from the opening minute as Willem II faced Excelsior in the fifth matchweek of the 2026/27 Eredivisie. Unfortunately, this opportunity ended on a sour note, as Willem II suffered a 0-3 defeat at Koning Willem Stadion on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

Deployed at left back, Nathan played the full 90 minutes. The Indonesia national team player was part of a Willem II backline that struggled to contain Excelsior's attacks throughout the entire match.

This poor result has further worsened Willem II's position in the league table. Having collected just one point from five matches, the side now sits in 17th place.

In contrast, Excelsior climbed significantly up the standings. The three additional points brought their total to nine, lifting them to 4th position in the Eredivisie, as published on the competition's official website.

Excelsior applied pressure right from the first whistle, and took the lead as early as the 8th minute of the match.

Irakli Yegoian created the opening goal with a cross from the left flank, before David Garden arrived perfectly at the near post to convert the delivery.

Willem II attempted to mount a response, but conceded again before half time. In the 33rd minute, Excelsior were awarded a corner kick which was taken by Simon Janssen.

Maxime Delanghe met the incoming ball, won the aerial duel, and directed a header that could not be stopped by the Willem II defence.

Excelsior went into the half time break holding a 2-0 advantage.

Following the interval, Nathan remained on the pitch to guard Willem II's left defensive flank. The 24-year-old defender made several defensive interventions to try and neutralise opposition attacks.

However, the efforts of Nathan and his teammates were not enough to prevent Willem II from conceding once more.

Excelsior's third and final goal came in the 85th minute. Yegoian got himself on the scoresheet once again, latching onto a long ball played by goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel.

Yegoian carried the ball down the left side, drove forward into Willem II's defensive area, and fired a powerful shot towards the near post.

The 3-0 scoreline stood until the final whistle. Nathan was left with a disappointing result despite playing the full 90 minutes of the match.

Meanwhile, there was better news for another Indonesia national team player, Dean James, who was named in the starting line-up as Go Ahead Eagles hosted Utrecht.

Go Ahead Eagles secured a 3-1 victory in this fixture. The match was temporarily halted however, after Utrecht supporters threw fireworks into the area near Go Ahead Eagles' goal.

In another Eredivisie match, Maarten Paes did not get any game time for Ajax Amsterdam. The goalkeeper remained an unused substitute as Ajax fell 1-3 to PSV Eindhoven at Johan Cruyff Stadium.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen retained his place between the sticks for Ajax in this match, meaning Paes must continue waiting for his chance to make an appearance for his new club.
