Manchester City took the initiative right from kick-off. Haaland produced the first threatening chance with a headed effort, which was successfully stopped by Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Haaland received another opportunity shortly after, connecting with a cross from Antoine Semenyo for a close-range header that drifted wide of the target.
City's pressure did not ease. Phil Foden tested the defence with a strike from outside the penalty area, only to be denied by another save from Diogo Costa.
Costa went on to block consecutive chances created by Haaland and Rayan Cherki soon after.
The Porto goalkeeper was the reason the home side were able to keep their goal unbroken through the opening period.
City continued to hammer Porto's backline right until the end of the first half, but none of their created chances managed to alter the scoreboard.
Both sides headed into the half-time break with the score locked at 0-0.

Manchester City did not have to wait long after the restart to find the opening goal.
In the 47th minute, Enzo Fernandez played a pass that Haaland finished cleanly to put City 1-0 ahead.
The Norwegian striker's goal was reward for City's relentless attacking effort throughout the entire first half.
Porto attempted to mount a response. Alan Varela found space to unleash a long-range strike, but his effort flew wide of Manchester City's goal.
The home side soon found themselves under pressure once again. City controlled possession and created several additional chances, though were unable to double their lead for some time.
While Porto still had theoretical opportunities to draw level, Manchester City retained firm command of the match.
Haaland Seals Victory in the 90+1st Minute
As the match entered stoppage time, Haaland once again emerged as the difference maker.
In the 1st minute of added time, Haaland scored his second goal of the night by converting a pass from Rayan Ait-Nouri. The score became 2-0, putting the result out of Porto's reach.
Manchester City continued to dominate for the remaining moments of the fixture. Porto failed to produce any meaningful response before the final whistle blew.
