PGA Tour and DP World Tour Are Preparing a New Era After LIV Golf Filed for Bankruptcy.

Professional golf has entered a new phase following LIV Golf's bankruptcy protection filing. This development has prompted the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to strengthen their partnership, while also restructuring the framework of international golf competition.

Amid these shifts, several players who previously opted to join LIV Golf — including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith — now face uncertainty over the future of their careers.

Rahm is among those awaiting updates on LIV Golf's ongoing legal proceedings. The Spanish golfer stated that this process will take time before there is clarity on what lies ahead for the affected players.

"There is a long legal process they have to go through before most things can proceed as planned," Jon Rahm stated.

Rahm also cannot yet confirm what his next professional move will be.

"I honestly cannot give you an answer right now," he said.

PGA Tour Prepares Two-Tier Competition Structure

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour is moving forward with major overhauls scheduled to take effect in 2028. Under the new structure, competition will be split into two tiers: the elite Championship Series as the top level, followed by the Challenger Series.

The system will also implement promotion and relegation mechanisms. Under this format, access to the PGA Tour's highest tier will be determined solely by players' competitive performance.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp confirmed that players who left the tour to join LIV Golf will not be granted an automatic path to return.

"Under current circumstances, we are not considering any special reinstatement programs for former members like what was introduced back in January," Brian Rolapp said.

According to Rolapp, every player will be required to meet established eligibility requirements to secure a place on the PGA Tour.

"The PGA Tour is built on meritocracy. Every player — whether they are an existing member or seeking to join — must earn their spot. This is a membership organisation, we have rules, and those rules exist for many reasons including fairness and competitive balance. These rules matter, and they will be enforced," Rolapp stated.

He also emphasised that consistent rule enforcement and accountability are critical to upholding the PGA Tour's competitive structure.

"Accountability and discipline are fundamental components of every professional sports league, and they are absolutely vital to the integrity of the PGA Tour and this sport as a whole. These are the principles that keep this tour functioning," he added.

PGA Tour Card Allocation Still Under Negotiation

This structural overhaul is also shaping the working relationship between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Both governing bodies are still in discussions over how many PGA Tour cards will be awarded to players competing on the European circuit.

Under the current system, the top 10 finishers on the Race to Dubai standings receive full PGA Tour status. This arrangement is currently up for review as part of the new structure negotiations.

"This remains an ongoing discussion, both internally and through our continuing conversations with the DP World Tour," Rolapp said.

He noted that talks between the two tours are still active, and final details of their partnership have not yet been formalised.

"The spirit of these discussions has been extremely productive. Both sides are working creatively to find ways to adjust and improve our existing partnership," Rolapp stated.

Rory McIlroy Raises Concerns Over Challenger Series Pathway

Rory McIlroy has also weighed in on the DP World Tour's place within the proposed new system.

The Northern Irish golfer has questioned why DP World Tour players would be required to drop down or transfer into the Challenger Series in order to progress towards the Championship Series.

"I don't see any reason DP World Tour players should have to go into the Challenger Series. I don't view that as a career step forward. To me, that is just a lateral move," Rory McIlroy said.

McIlroy added that the next critical negotiation point will be finalising how many direct promotion cards will be available from the DP World Tour straight into the Championship Series.

"No one is going to argue that the Championship Series will be the highest level of tour golf you can compete at. Once that is established, the whole question becomes setting an appropriate number of promotion spots up from here into the Championship Series," he said.

DP World Tour Strengthens Ties With Asian Tour

Alongside the PGA Tour restructuring, the DP World Tour has also formalised closer ties with the Asian Tour via a new three-way agreement that also includes the PGA Tour.

This marks a significant shift after the Asian Tour previously held a commercial partnership with LIV Golf under an approximately $300 million USD deal. That arrangement changed following the Public Investment Fund (PIF) reducing its financial backing for LIV Golf.

Under the new agreement, the winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit will receive a full DP World Tour card. Additional top-finishing players on the Asian Tour standings will gain entry to the HotelPlanner Tour.

A number of Asian tournaments will also be added to the DP World Tour calendar with co-sanctioned status, including the Hong Kong Open, Deutsche Bank Singapore Open, and Australian Open.

DP World Tour Reflects On LIV Golf Competition

DP World Tour Chief Tournament and Operations Officer Ben Cowen confirmed that regular communication has resumed with Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant to build a formal working partnership between the two tours.

"Cho and I have stayed in touch over these last few years. I always told him, 'There will come a time, I hope, when we can work together again'," Ben Cowen said.

Cowen stated he understood and respected the Asian Tour's decision to partner with LIV Golf back in 2021.

"I had enormous respect for the call Cho and his board had to make to partner with LIV in 2021. That deal was an extremely good outcome for them and their membership," he noted.

At the same time, Cowen acknowledged that the DP World Tour faced direct, sustained competition from LIV Golf over recent years, including battles over tournament slots, venues, sponsors, and national open championships.

"For the last five years this has been an ongoing fight. LIV was pursuing tournaments on our calendar, pursuing the venues we use, and going after sponsors that were part of our tour ecosystem," Cowen said.

According to Cowen, the DP World Tour had to consistently demonstrate the value of its tour ecosystem to partners, including its global broadcast reach and official partnership with the PGA Tour.

Australian Open Remains In PGA Tour/DP World Tour Ecosystem

One widely noted success from these negotiations is the confirmation that the Australian Open will remain part of the combined PGA Tour and DP World Tour calendar.

Prior to the agreement, there had been widespread reports that the championship was at risk of moving to LIV Golf. It will instead remain within the joint tour schedule.

Cowen noted that retaining these tournaments and partner agreements required significant time and dedicated effort.

"There was a lot of speculation that multiple national opens, including the Australian Open, would join LIV. That's why it was such a positive moment when we were able to announce the Australian Open is staying with us under this new PGA Tour partnership," Cowen said.

He acknowledged that navigating this period of competition has been difficult for the DP World Tour.

"This took an enormous amount of hard work, time and effort. It has been a challenging journey, but I believe we are now in a very strong position."

With the PGA Tour restructuring and the formalised three-way partnership between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Asian Tour, global professional golf has entered a new era. At the same time, the future of former LIV Golf players remains uncertain, pending the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings and the finalisation of the new competitive structure.
