2026 UEFA Super Cup Prediction: PSG are the favourites, Aston Villa maximise their momentum

Paris Saint-Germain will look to defend their UEFA Super Cup title when they face Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, early Thursday WIB. This match pits last season's two European champions against each other. PSG arrive as reigning Champions League winners, while Aston Villa booked their place in this fixture after lifting the Europa League trophy.

For PSG, this clash in Salzburg is far more than just the opening fixture of the campaign. Luis Enrique's side have the chance to join an exclusive list of clubs that have successfully retained the UEFA Super Cup.

PSG Target Historic UEFA Super Cup Title Defence

Last season, PSG had to battle through a dramatic contest to lift the UEFA Super Cup trophy.

Les Parisiens required late goals from Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos to force a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, before eventually securing a 4-3 penalty shootout victory in Udine.

Now, PSG have the opportunity to become only the fourth team ever to retain the Super Cup trophy.

Prior to this, only Ajax managed the feat across 1973 and 1974, AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, and Real Madrid between 2016 and 2017.

Luis Enrique holds an impressive record in this competition. Having guided PSG to victory over Tottenham last season, the Spanish head coach previously led Barcelona to a thrilling 5-4 win over Sevilla back in 2015.

That match still stands as the highest-scoring fixture in the entire history of the UEFA Super Cup.

PSG travel to Salzburg as the clear favourites. They just retained their Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal on penalties, with squad depth across almost every position acting as their biggest asset to lift the trophy once again.

PSG's attacking output is also notable: they have scored in 28 consecutive matches across all competitions, dating back to their 0-1 defeat against Paris FC back in January.

This run marks PSG's longest scoring streak since they registered goals in 36 straight matches between September 2019 and July 2020.

Aston Villa Arrive On Positive Form Momentum

Aston Villa face a daunting task, particularly as recent history has heavily favoured Champions League holders in this fixture.

Over the last 13 editions, only one Europa League winner has ever gone on to claim the UEFA Super Cup. That sole exception came in 2018, when Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 4-2.

That said, Villa do not arrive without momentum. Unai Emery's side closed out the 2025/2026 campaign on strong form.

After suffering three straight defeats across April and May, Villa won four of their final five matches with one draw, scoring at least two goals in every single fixture during that run.

This winning streak included a comprehensive victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final.

Emiliano Buendía got on the scoresheet in that final, though his fellow goalscorers Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers have since departed the club, joining Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

The Salzburg fixture will also serve as an early test for a number of Aston Villa's new signings.

Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, and loanee Alejandro Garnacho are all in line to get minutes against the back-to-back European champions.

Unai Emery's Troubling UEFA Super Cup Record

Despite his vast experience in European club competitions, Unai Emery is yet to taste success in the UEFA Super Cup.

He missed out on the trophy with Sevilla following defeats to Real Madrid in 2014 and Barcelona in 2015.

Emery suffered another disappointment in 2021, when his Villarreal side were beaten on penalties by Chelsea.

Notably, five out of the last six UEFA Super Cup matches featuring English clubs have gone all the way to a penalty shootout.

In fact, the last four editions of the competition have all been decided from the spot.

The only exception to this trend was Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Manchester United back in 2017.

PSG vs Aston Villa: Third Ever Meeting

This match in Salzburg will be the third competitive meeting between PSG and Aston Villa.

The two sides previously faced off in the 2024/2025 Champions League quarter finals. PSG secured a 3-1 home win in the first leg, before falling 2-3 at Villa Park in the return fixture.

That result was still enough for PSG to progress with a 5-4 aggregate scoreline.

For Aston Villa, this will be their second ever appearance at the UEFA Super Cup. On their previous outing in 1983, the then-European Cup winners defeated Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate, recovering from a 0-1 away loss to record a 3-0 home victory.

PSG meanwhile are making their third appearance in the competition. Back in 1997 they suffered a heavy 2-9 aggregate defeat to Juventus, before claiming their first Super Cup title last season via that penalty shootout win over Tottenham.

Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos, PSG's two goalscorers in last season's final, have both left the club. Lee has joined Atletico Madrid, while Ramos has moved on to AC Milan.

Even so, the arrival of Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco has given PSG supporters fresh reason for optimism heading into the new campaign.

According to Opta supercomputer projections, PSG are the clear favourites to come out on top in this fixture.

Out of 10,000 pre-match simulations run, PSG recorded a victory inside 90 minutes in 45 percent of all runs.

Aston Villa hold a 29.6 percent chance of winning the match in normal time.

Meanwhile there is a 25.5 percent chance the match finishes level after 90 minutes, proceeding to extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.
