Chelsea have once again demonstrated their aggressive approach in the 2026 summer transfer window. The Blues have signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a staggering fee of £117 million, equivalent to approximately IDR 2.82 trillion. This figure places the 24-year-old attacking midfielder among the most expensive transfer signings in the history of English football.
Chelsea officially announced the Rogers transfer on 21 July 2026. This acquisition forms part of the new squad rebuild project under manager Xabi Alonso. At the time of writing, this transfer fee makes Rogers the most expensive signing in the 2026 Premier League summer window so far.
Overall, Rogers ranks as the second most expensive signing in English top flight history. He sits only behind Alexander Isak, who Liverpool acquired for £125 million, around IDR 3 trillion, during the previous transfer window.

Rogers' transfer fee is marginally higher than the £116 million Manchester City paid to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
Rogers' Market Value Skyrocketed
This move to Chelsea highlights just how rapidly Morgan Rogers' valuation has risen over the past few years.
Aston Villa originally signed Rogers for just £28 million. Back in 2024 at the time of that signing, Transfermarkt had listed his market value at only around £2.3 million.
His performances for Aston Villa subsequently saw his valuation multiply many times over.
Across two seasons wearing The Villans colours, Rogers made 125 appearances across all competitions, registering 31 goals and 29 assists. He was also part of the Aston Villa squad that won the 2025/2026 UEFA Europa League.
This trophy remains the biggest honour of Rogers' professional career to date. Prior to this, he had only claimed honours at youth academy level.
From West Brom Academy To Manchester City
Rogers began his football journey at local youth side Halas Hawks, before joining the West Bromwich Albion academy system in 2010.
After nine years developing at the club, Manchester City signed him to integrate into their youth development setup.
With City's youth teams, Rogers won the 2019/2020 FA Youth Cup and the 2020/2021 Premier League 2 U21 title.
Following this success, Rogers completed a series of loan moves to gain senior first team experience, representing Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool.
Middlesbrough then signed him on a permanent deal ahead of the start of the 2022/2023 season. That single season at Middlesbrough proved to be a critical turning point in Rogers' development, prior to Aston Villa securing his signature.
His impressive form at Middlesbrough caught the attention of Aston Villa, and two successful seasons with the Midlands club saw his reputation grow exponentially.
Chelsea Believe Rogers Will Be A Cornerstone Of Their New Era
Chelsea's decision to pay £117 million for the player underlines the huge faith they have in Rogers' ability.
Capable of operating both as an advanced playmaker behind the striker and as a wide attacking player, Rogers provides valuable tactical flexibility for Xabi Alonso.
At just 24 years old, his age was also a key factor behind Chelsea's willingness to commit such a large transfer fee. The Blues are not just signing a player for his current form, they are investing in a player they intend to be a core part of the club's long term project.
Rogers now enters a brand new chapter of his career. From a young Manchester City academy prospect, through multiple loan spells across English football, his development at Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, has now culminated in him becoming one of the most expensive players in Premier League history.
This £117 million transfer fee has elevated him to an entirely new status. However this record price tag also brings with it enormous pressure.
Rogers' task now is to prove that this extraordinary fee is not just a number on paper, but a true reflection of the quality he will deliver on the pitch.
