Indonesia's Women's Badminton Team Secures At Least Bronze Medal at the 2026 Asian Games

Indonesia's women's badminton team has secured a medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. This confirmation came after the Merah Putih squad defeated Chinese Taipei 3-1 in the quarter-final match held at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium, Japan, on Tuesday.

With this victory, the Indonesian women's team advanced to the semi-final round, guaranteeing them at least a bronze medal. Under tournament regulations, teams eliminated in the semi-finals automatically receive bronze medals with no separate third-place playoff match held.

This result also marks a comeback for the squad, following the total failure of Indonesia's women's badminton team at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. At that tournament, Indonesia failed to win a single medal in the badminton competition for the first time ever in the country's Asian Games history.

For the women's team, the target they had set upon arriving in Japan is now starting to be realised. Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti could not hide her joy following the win.

"Alhamdulillah, I feel extremely happy that we were able to close this match with a victory. Winning a medal was always our goal for the women's squad, we are all really happy and excited right now," stated Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti at Ichinomiya City Stadium, Aichi, Japan, on Tuesday.

Fadia and Febriana Secure The Deciding Point

Indonesia had not yet locked in victory when the fourth match commenced. The Merah Putih squad held only a narrow 2-1 lead over Chinese Taipei, making this fourth rubber the make-or-break point that would decide whether their campaign would continue or end at the quarter-final stage.

It was at this critical juncture that the pair Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma stepped up as the team's saviours.

The duo completed their fourth match assignment perfectly, sealing the overall 3-1 team victory and confirming Indonesia's spot in the semi-final round.

This match carried special meaning for both Fadia and Febriana. Both players are part of the core women's team roster that has been specifically prepared by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PP PBSI) from the very beginning to target top results in the team event.

PBSI had prioritised the team competitions as the main focus for this tournament, before athletes will compete in the individual event categories.

Their calm composure throughout the deciding fourth match made all the difference. When the team needed just one more win to progress, both players rose to the pressure and ensured Indonesia would not exit the tournament in the quarter-finals.

The Hangzhou Disappointment Finally Eases

Four years prior, Indonesia's badminton contingent left the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou without winning a single medal.

Worse still, not one Indonesian athlete even managed to reach the semi-finals of any individual event. This marked the first such occurrence in Asian Games history, ever since badminton was introduced as an official sport at the continental event back in 1962.

Now, Indonesia has already guaranteed at least one medal from the tournament.

The Challenge Is Far From Over

While a medal has now been secured, the campaign for Indonesia's women's badminton team is not finished yet. The semi-final round will present their next major test.

Indonesia will need to maintain peak physical condition, focus and concentration, as matches in the final four will leave no room for errors.

PBSI had previously compiled the team line-up based on full evaluations of player performance, physical and technical condition, as well as the tactical requirements for team competition play.

The women's squad now holds one important advantage: the heavy pressure of avoiding another medal-less tournament has now been lifted.

They have already confirmed they will leave Japan with at least a bronze medal.

Now their target can shift. From only aiming to secure any medal at all, the squad now has the opportunity to push for a higher placed medal.
