Cristiano Ronaldo Remains the Portugal National Team's Mainstay, Will the Al Nassr Mega Star Postpone His Retirement?

Cristiano Ronaldo has been recalled to the Portugal national team squad for the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League under new head coach Jorge Jesus. This call-up confirms the 41-year-old Al Nassr superstar has not yet brought his international career with the national side to an end.  

Speculation had previously circulated surrounding Ronaldo's future with Portugal. While CR7 has stated the 2026 World Cup would be his final World Cup tournament, he has not yet announced his retirement from international football.

Jorge Jesus included Ronaldo on the player list for four Nations League fixtures scheduled across the September-October international window. 

Portugal will open their campaign against Wales on 24 September, followed by matches against Norway on 27 September, Denmark on 1 October, before facing Norway once again on 4 October.

Ronaldo Retains His Place In The National Squad

Ronaldo's call-up was one of the most prominent talking points from Jorge Jesus' first ever squad announcement as Portugal manager.

Jesus retained the vast majority of the squad that featured at the 2026 World Cup. Among the selected senior players, Ronaldo remains an option in the forward line alongside Rafael Leao, Joao Felix, Goncalo Ramos, Pedro Neto, Francisco Trincao, Francisco Conceicao and Fabio Silva.

This selection extends Ronaldo's international career which has now spanned over two decades. At this stage of his career, every national team call-up now receives dedicated global attention.

Inclusion in this squad gives Ronaldo the opportunity to add further to his all-time appearance and goal tallies for Portugal.

Ronaldo Reunites With Jorge Jesus

This call-up also sees Ronaldo reunited with Jorge Jesus. The pair previously worked together at Al Nassr, before Jesus was appointed as the new Portugal national team head coach. 

Their prior working relationship at club level means the pair already know each other well, though they now face a very different challenge representing national team interests.

Jesus has confirmed that on-pitch performance will remain the sole basis for player selection. As such, Ronaldo will still have to compete with the other selected forwards for match minutes.

For Portugal, Ronaldo's experience remains a valued part of the squad makeup. For the player himself, this call-up provides the chance to continue his international journey following the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal Retains Majority Of Senior Players

Alongside Ronaldo, the Portugal squad remains filled with long-serving established international players. Between the goalkeeping options are Diogo Costa, Rui Silva and Samuel Soares. 

The defensive line consists of Ruben Dias, Diogo Dalot, Joao Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Nuno Tavares, Renato Veiga, Tomas Araujo and Goncalo Inacio.

Midfield options include Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha, Joao Neves, Ruben Neves and Joao Palhinha.

This squad composition demonstrates continuity for Portugal, with experienced players featuring alongside emerging young talents.

Of all players named in Jesus' squad, Ronaldo is one of the oldest members, and also holds the longest international career record within the group.

Chance To Extend Portugal Goal Records

Ronaldo still has the opportunity to extend a number of his individual national team records.

He is captain of Portugal, and holds the all-time world records for most international appearances and most international goals scored. UEFA also recognises Ronaldo as the first ever player to score at six separate World Cup finals tournaments.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, a new chapter now begins for the side with this Nations League campaign.

Portugal enter this competition as the defending champions. In the 2024/25 edition, Portugal claimed their second Nations League title, having also won the inaugural tournament back in 2019.

Ronaldo's inclusion brings a unique dynamic to Portugal's title defence. However, the competition format and their placement in Group A4 means Portugal will play a total of six league phase matches overall, not just the four games scheduled for the September-October break.

It Is Not Yet Time To Say Goodbye

For now, Cristiano Ronaldo's story with the Portugal national team continues. While he is no longer a young player, his name once again appears on the official squad list for competitive international fixtures. 

With no official international retirement announcement made, the door remains open for Ronaldo to pull on the Portugal jersey once more in future.

For Jorge Jesus, the task ahead is to strike the right balance between experienced veterans and the next generation of players. For Ronaldo, the challenge will be to maintain his performance levels to remain part of the coach's plans going forward.

Ronaldo has been called up. He is still in the squad, and still has the chance to add to his historic records for his country.

One thing is certain: Portugal are not saying goodbye to their number seven just yet.
