Cristian Romero Officially Joins Atletico Madrid, Simeone's Solution for the Defensive Line

Jakarta - Atletico Madrid have officially completed the signing of Cristian "Cuti" Romero from Tottenham Hotspur. The Argentina international defender has signed a contract running until 30 June 2031, bringing an end to his five-year spell in North London and opening a new chapter working under Diego Simeone.

This transfer is far more than just another routine piece of Atletico's summer transfer business. Simeone has acquired a centre-back whose playing profile aligns perfectly with the football identity he has built over the years: aggressive in duels, unafraid to cut out opposition attacks, and willing to fight hard at the back line.

Atletico confirmed the agreement with Tottenham on Saturday, 15 August 2026. While the club did not disclose the transfer fee, reports from BBC and Reuters state Atletico paid approximately £34.2 million for the 28-year-old player on the five-season contract.

In their official announcement, Atletico described Romero as a right-sided centre back who is "physically dominant, sharp with his anticipation, and clinical in tackles", while also possessing strong on-pitch leadership qualities.

This exact profile is precisely why this signing was such an attractive prospect for Simeone.

Atletico are not just getting a player with proven Premier League experience. They have signed a defender accustomed to performing under high-pressure match environments, with the personality to lead a defensive unit.

Romero also arrives in Madrid with an extensive international pedigree. He was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup winning squad, and most recently featured for the Albiceleste all the way to the 2026 World Cup final - a status Atletico specifically highlighted in his arrival announcement.

However, before officially becoming an Atletico player, Romero first had to close the long chapter of his career at Tottenham.

He first joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan. Tottenham later made the move permanent, and Romero went on to establish himself as one of the club's key first team defenders.

Across five seasons he made 156 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and registering seven assists. He was also appointed Tottenham captain for his final season at the club.

The peak of Romero's time in London came in 2025.

He was a pivotal figure as Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final. That victory ended Tottenham's 17 year trophy drought, and marked the club's first European honour in 41 years. Romero was awarded both Man of the Match for the final and Player of the Tournament for the entire competition.

For Romero, this success fulfilled the ambition he held when he first arrived at the club.

In his farewell message, he stated he had held "a clear dream" to etch his name into Tottenham's history.

"I leave Tottenham with a heart full of memories, and proud of everything we have gone through and achieved together", Romero said.

He acknowledged he was never a perfect player during his five years in London. However, he stressed that he always gave his absolute best, and represented Tottenham with full pride and his whole heart.

That statement carries weight, because Romero's journey at Tottenham was never an entirely smooth one.

His final season in London in fact ended under complicated circumstances. His final appearance for the club came against Sunderland in April. Romero left the pitch in tears after suffering a knee injury that would rule him out of Tottenham's final six Premier League matches.

At that point, Spurs were still fighting to avoid relegation. Romero also faced public criticism after planning to travel back to Argentina to watch his boyhood club Belgrano play in the Primera Division Apertura final.

Romero ultimately returned to England, and was present as Tottenham beat Everton 1-0. This result secured Spurs' Premier League survival, as they ended the season in 17th place.

For this reason, Romero's departure cannot be written off simply as a player leaving a club after a difficult campaign.

He exits having completed the very mission he arrived with in London: win silverware, and leave a permanent mark on Tottenham's history.

Now Atletico hope that same uncompromising character will be part of Simeone's solution for the team.

Romero is renowned as an aggressive defender who will not hesitate to step out of the defensive line to win duels.

This trait was the source of controversy on multiple occasions during his time in England, but it is also exactly what makes him such a highly valued player.

At Atletico Madrid, this aggression will likely find a far more welcoming environment.

For years Simeone has built Atletico around defensive organisation, intensity, discipline, and fearless commitment in individual duels.

Romero will not need to fundamentally alter his core playing style. Instead, he will learn to channel that aggression within a more structured system.

This is what makes this transfer so compelling.

Simeone has not simply signed a new centre back. He has acquired a player whose natural character is perfectly aligned with Atletico's philosophy, who also brings Premier League, European competition and dual World Cup experience.

As he himself admitted, he does not leave Tottenham as a perfect player. But he leaves as a player who delivered the one thing the club had waited decades for.

Now working under Simeone, Romero faces an entirely new challenge.

He will no longer only be expected to be an aggressive defender. He is being brought in to be one of the foundation stones of Atletico's defence through until 2031.

If Simeone can successfully combine Romero's natural aggression with Atletico's structured defensive system, this transfer will be far more than just another player signing.
