The first matchweek of the 2026/2027 English Premier League immediately served up a number of shocking results. Arsenal got their season off to a convincing winning start, while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both suffered opening defeats.

Arsenal put on a dominant display as they hosted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium, London, on Friday 21 August 2026 local time. The Gunners wrapped up the match with a 3-0 victory to secure their first three points of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Manchester United were stunned as they were outplayed by newly promoted side Hull City. Playing at the MKM Stadium on Saturday 22 August 2026, the Red Devils suffered a clean 2-0 defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur faced the same fate. The London club failed to pick up any points on their trip to Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium, as they were handed a heavy 0-3 loss on Sunday 23 August 2026.

Arsenal Hit The Ground Running

Arsenal did not take long to seize control of the game against Coventry City. Bukayo Saka and his teammates applied relentless pressure right from the opening minute.

The first chance fell to Saka, whose strike was successfully blocked by the Coventry defensive line.

Arsenal's pressure finally paid off in the 15th minute. After a neat short passing combination from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz finished off the chance to put Arsenal 1-0 ahead.

The lead was extended just eight minutes later. Saka pounced on a loose rebound inside the penalty area to score Arsenal's second goal in the 23rd minute.

Mikel Arteta's side continued their aggressive approach into the second half. Martin Ødegaard then made it 3-0 in the 49th minute, converting a cutback pass from Ben White.

Arsenal remained in full control of the match for the full 90 minutes. No further goals were scored, and the 3-0 scoreline stood until the final whistle.

With these three points, Arsenal immediately sit top of the provisional 2026/2027 Premier League table. Coventry meanwhile prop up the standings after failing to register any points on opening day.

Manchester United Upset By Hull City

Manchester United endured a nightmare start to their season. On their visit to Hull City's home ground, the Manchester side fell to a 0-2 defeat against the newly promoted club.

United had attempted to take control of the game early on. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha created chances in the 12th and 14th minute respectively, but both efforts were dealt with by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Hull soon responded through Oli McBurnie. The striker almost broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a headed effort from Ryan Giles' cross, only for Senne Lammens to pull off a vital save.

Just two minutes later, the Manchester United goalkeeper could no longer keep his clean sheet intact.

Lammens initially parried McBurnie's header, but the loose ball dropped perfectly for Semi Ajayi. The Hull defender fired home from close range to put the hosts 1-0 up.

Manchester United pushed for an equaliser. Dorgu created an opening in the 28th minute, but his shot drifted wide of the target.

Another chance came in the 35th minute, when Bryan Mbeumo connected with Luke Shaw's cross with an acrobatic volley, only for the effort to strike a Hull City defender.

Instead of pulling level, Manchester United conceded a second goal just three minutes later.

Hull were awarded a free kick which was delivered by Regan Slater. The cross into the penalty area was met by Noble Mendy, whose header beat Lammens.

The 2-0 scoreline remained at half time, and stood unchanged for the rest of the match.

For this fixture, Manchester United fielded new signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in midfield, while Hull City deployed Oli McBurnie as their lead striker.

Tottenham Blown Away By Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur also failed to get their season off to a positive start. On their visit to Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium, Spurs left the ground on the wrong end of a 0-3 defeat.

Brentford came out firing right from kickoff. Their early pressure resulted in the opening goal in the 12th minute, scored by Keane Lewis-Potter.

The goal came after Mamadou Sangare broke into the Tottenham penalty area. Sangare played a neat one-two with Lewis-Potter, before the striker fired an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net past Antonin Kinsky.

Tottenham attempted to respond by upping their attacking intensity, but the away side could not find an equalising goal.

Brentford extended their lead instead in the 33rd minute. Vitaly Janelt capitalised on a handling error from Kinsky, with the spilled ball landing straight at the feet of Janelt who easily converted the chance.

Tottenham went into the half time break two goals down. Their situation got even worse just four minutes after the restart, when Brentford scored once again.

Michael Kayode took advantage of another error from Kinsky dealing with an incoming ball. Poor defending and clearance from Tottenham left Kayode with all the time he needed to fire home Brentford's third goal.

Brentford were presented with an opportunity to extend their lead even further in the 54th minute after being awarded a penalty. However Igor Thiago failed to convert the spot kick, striking his effort against the goalpost.

Tottenham continued to push for a consolation goal, but Brentford successfully protected their lead by dropping deeper, defending solidly and slowing the pace of the game.

The 3-0 scoreline remained until full time, giving Brentford three points to start their season, while Tottenham left the stadium with nothing.
