Unhappy news has emerged regarding Indonesia National Team player Ole Romeny, who was forced to exit the match early when Fortuna Sittard hosted AZ Alkmaar in the 2026/2027 Eredivisie fixture.

Fortuna Sittard suffered a 0-2 defeat against AZ Alkmaar at Offermans Joosten Stadium, Sittard, on Saturday evening 22 August 2026 WIB. This result dropped Fortuna to 8th position in the provisional standings, with 4 points collected from 3 matches played.

On the other hand, AZ Alkmaar remains comfortably positioned at the top of the table. The club has secured 9 points from their three completed matches.

Ole Romeny Shown Straight Red Card

Romeny only spent approximately five minutes on the pitch before the referee issued him an immediate red card.

The 26-year-old striker received the sanction after being judged to have committed a dangerous foul against AZ Alkmaar left-back Mateo Chavez during a ball contest.

Romeny was found to have stepped directly on Chavez's ankle. This decision forced Fortuna Sittard to play nearly the entire remainder of the match with only 10 players.

Holding the man advantage, AZ Alkmaar immediately took full control of the game. Peer Koopmeiners created the first major threatening chance with a strike from outside the penalty box in the 24th minute.

Four minutes later, Mexx Meerdink came very close to opening the scoring, only for Fortuna Sittard goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst to successfully deny the attempt.

As half time approached, AZ intensified their attacking pressure. Koopmeiners and Ro-Zangelo Daal both tested the defence with long range efforts in the 42nd and 43rd minutes respectively.

Branderhorst once again proved Fortuna's saviour as he blocked both attempts, leaving the first half goalless.

Justin Hubner Anchors Fortuna Defence

Entering the second half, AZ Alkmaar did not ease off their attacking pressure. Fortuna Sittard were forced into deep defensive play to protect their goal from the visiting side's constant advances.

Indonesia National Team defender Justin Hubner played a critical role in Fortuna's efforts to contain AZ's offence, operating alongside Syb van Ottele and Siebe Wylin in the back line.

Fortuna's resistance finally broke in the 58th minute. Jizz Hornkamp put AZ ahead after pouncing on a rebound from Calvin Stengs' shot which had struck the goalpost.

Before Fortuna's backline could react to the loose ball, Hornkamp burst forward with a sliding finish to turn the ball home, putting the score at 1-0.

AZ grew increasingly confident after taking the lead. Additional clear chances were created, including attempts from Ivo Pinto and Meerdink in the 61st minute.

However, Branderhorst continued to keep Fortuna in the match, pulling off a series of crucial saves to prevent a second concession.

AZ's second goal only arrived in second half stoppage time. Hornkamp recorded his second goal of the match in the 90+4th minute.

On this occasion, Hornkamp converted a short layoff pass from Stengs inside the penalty area to seal a 2-0 victory for AZ Alkmaar.

This result maintains AZ Alkmaar's perfect start with 9 points from three matches, keeping them firmly at the top of the Eredivisie standings. Meanwhile, this defeat marks Fortuna Sittard's second loss of the current season.
