Malang – On the slopes of Mount Arjuno, Malang Regency, East Java, lies an area that offers a travel experience with quite distinct characteristics.

Located within the Singosari district and sitting at approximately 1,422 meters above sea level (masl), Budug Asu stands as one of the leading natural travel destinations on Mount Arjuno's slopes.

The journey itself to reach Budug Asu is actually the most defining part of the entire experience.

Rolling tea plantations, dense pine forests, crisp mountain air, paired with steep and slippery trail sections form the full sequence of the trip before arriving at the highland area.

The drive from Surabaya to the Budug Asu access point takes approximately two hours.

Passing Through Wonosari Tea Plantation

The access route to Budug Asu takes all visitors through the Wonosari Tea Plantation.

After parking vehicles at the official entrance area, the remainder of the journey continues on foot.

Endless orderly rows of tea bushes greet hikers immediately.

Lines of green foliage stretch seamlessly following the natural contour of Mount Arjuno's slopes. The cool clean air creates a stark, refreshing contrast from busy urban atmospheres.

Within the plantation grounds, local tea pickers going about their daily work also become a quiet, living part of the scenery.

Wonosari Tea Plantation holds a long history. This estate was first established in 1875 during the Dutch colonial era. In its early development, the area was not only planted with tea, but also cultivated for coffee and cinchona crops.

Large scale dedicated tea farming was only implemented around 1910.

Following Indonesia's independence, the plantation was officially taken over by the state.

Until today, plantation operations remain an integral core of daily community life in Wonosari.

Halfway along the trail, the reporting team stopped briefly to speak with the tea pickers before continuing onwards towards Budug Asu.

From The Tea Plantation Into The Pine Forest

After clearing the tea plantation grounds, the atmosphere of the journey shifts gradually.

The trail begins to enter the protected pine forest zone.

Tall mature pine trees stand towering along both sides of the path. The surroundings grow noticeably shadier, and the entire mood of the hike begins to feel like a proper wilderness adventure.

This pine forest does more than simply change the atmosphere of the walk.

The vegetation here also serves critical ecological functions. Its deep root systems stabilise mountain soil, while the tree canopy provides shelter and habitat for countless native organisms.

As the team walked further, the trail brought them ever closer to the Budug Asu highlands.

Eventually, a small trail outpost marks the final stopping point before the last ascent to the peak.

Two Routes To Budug Asu

From this outpost, hikers are presented with two different trail options.

The first route runs for approximately 2 kilometers.

While it covers longer distance, this path has a gentle gradient and is relatively easier to traverse.

The alternate option measures only around 800 meters long.

However this shorter distance comes with a very different set of challenges.

This 800 meter trail features sharply inclined, steep terrain.

These two choices offer vastly different travel experiences, though both lead to the same final destination.

For this expedition, the team selected the 800 meter route.

The challenge became apparent within the first few steps.

Steep, slippery ground required every movement to be taken with great care. Certain sections of the trail also demanded significant physical exertion to cross.

This is the point where the journey to Budug Asu becomes more than just travelling to a location.

Every single step requires deliberate effort.

Budug Asu At 1,422 Meters Above Sea Level

After navigating that final steep trail section, the team finally arrived at the Budug Asu highland.

Sitting exactly at 1,422 meters above sea level, this spot offers a rare unobstructed vantage point across Mount Arjuno's slopes.

From this elevation, the entire landscape of greater Malang stretches out far below.

The cool mountain air and wide open views are the reward earned after the long climb from the base.

The name Budug Asu itself carries an interesting backstory.

One oral version commonly shared by local residents links the name to packs of stray dogs that used to roam this remote area frequently in past decades.

As this is an unrecorded local origin account, this story is properly understood as part of the community folklore surrounding Budug Asu.

Today, this unusual name belongs to a natural site loved for its quiet scenery and memorable travel experience.
