India Withdraws from the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, Chooses to Compete Against the Five-Time World Champions.

The competitive landscape of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup could shift after reports confirm the India men's national football team has decided to withdraw from the Indonesia-hosted tournament. If India pulls out, one berth in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup Premier Division will be left vacant. 

India had been selected as one of the invited guest nations from outside the Southeast Asian region. They were originally drawn into Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Citing a report from Times of India published Thursday, India has opted to reallocate its focus to an international friendly fixture against Brazil, scheduled to be held in Kolkata on 3 October.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed a scheduling clash is the core reason the country cannot participate in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

"We are unable to take part in the FIFA ASEAN Cup due to our existing commitment with the Brazilian Football Confederation," Chaubey stated.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to commence on 24 September. National teams are bound by strict match limits during official FIFA international windows. Chaubey noted this constraint has already been formally communicated to FIFA governing officials.

"There are also technical limitations here: only four matches are permitted for any national team during this specific window. We have notified FIFA and all relevant stakeholders so they may understand the circumstances that forced this decision," Chaubey added.

Over the last three years, India has already played multiple fixtures against Southeast Asian opposition, including matches against Singapore and Malaysia.

By contrast, India has never faced the Brazil national team at senior level. This upcoming fixture will also be played on home soil in Kolkata, in front of domestic supporters.

"Playing against Brazil will almost certainly be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our players. This match will also help drive the growth of football right across our country," Chaubey remarked.

Following the Brazil fixture, the AIFF is arranging two additional high-profile international friendlies for the same window.

Chaubey declined to name the potential opposition due to confidentiality agreements, though inside sources confirm one of the two sides has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"The ASEAN Cup is an extremely well-regarded, high-profile competition. We do regret missing the chance to compete there, but we will maximise this FIFA international window to its full potential. India will play two extra challenging friendly matches against sides ranked significantly higher than us in the world rankings. There is enormous value and learning for our squad from fixtures at this level," he concluded.
