Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung are heading into the new season under very different circumstances. Persija is currently building up their squad under Shin Tae-yong, while Persib enter pre-season with established match rhythm after progressing all the way to the Presidential Cup final.
This contrast in preparation between the two sides was discussed on the ITSMe podcast, recorded at ITSMe Studio in Sentul, Bogor. The session featured football analysts Ronny Pangemanan and Erwin Fitriansyah, hosted by Gilang Respaty and Pudila.
Persija have not been idle. Shin Tae-yong has taken the squad for a training camp in Thailand running an intensive physical programme, including twice-daily training sessions. This physical conditioning work is being laid as the core foundation before the coaching staff begin deep tactical work with the team.

Persija Still Missing Key Pieces
Even so, Persija's rebuild is far from complete.
Analysis during the podcast concluded that Persija still require an overseas striker who can adapt quickly and deliver consistent goals. Young players such as Raihan, Hanan and Doni Tri provide options, but a full-length league season will require a more proven, experienced forward.
There are also gaps in midfield. Persija are in need of a quality creative playmaker to replace the role of players who have departed the club.
Put simply, Persija need players that can both create clear goalscoring chances and finish them.
Transfer activity confirms the club is actively working to strengthen the squad. That said, all names currently circulating only as transfer rumours should not be treated as confirmed signings until an official announcement is made.
Persib Already Have Match Rhythm
Persib hold a clear advantage going into pre-season preparations. Having already competed through the full Presidential Cup tournament, the squad already has far more competitive match experience under their belt.
The return of players previously on international duty with the Indonesian National Team has also further completed their squad.
During the ITSMe podcast discussion, Persib was assessed as already properly match sharp, with their overall readiness estimated at above 70 percent. Note this figure was an opinion shared during the podcast, and is not an official fitness measurement.
Persib have continued their pre-season schedule competing in the Dewata Challenge Series.
On 15 August, Persib will face Sabah FC at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium in Gianyar. Sabah come into this fixture on the back of a 2-1 opening match victory against Bali United.
While Persib hold the edge in established match rhythm, Sabah carry fresh winning momentum. This fixture will serve as a key benchmark to gauge how ready the Maung Bandung squad are ahead of the official league kickoff.
Persija vs Persib Returns To Jakarta
All eyes will then turn to the meeting between Persija and Persib, scheduled for the second matchweek of the 2026/2027 Super League.
Persija will host Persib at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on 12 September 2026. This fixture was moved to the second round of the season after Persija requested this home derby be held earlier, a request which was approved by the I.League.
This match carries special significance: it will mark the first time Persija have hosted Persib in Jakarta in nearly seven years.
The match will be open to spectators, however travelling Persib supporters (Bobotoh) will be prohibited from attending as away fans, as part of special security restrictions implemented for this high-stakes derby.
A Test For Both Teams And Supporters
The rivalry between Persija and Persib stretches back decades. For this reason, every meeting between the two sides is not just a test for the players on the pitch, but also for their fanbases.
The return of full crowds to stadiums is a critical step towards reviving the atmosphere of Indonesian football. But this privilege must be upheld with maturity and responsibility.
Intense, passionate rivalry is welcome, but it must never cross into violence and disorder that harms the clubs, the players, or the league as a whole.
This match presents a dual test for Persija. Shin Tae-yong will be expected to demonstrate the progress of his squad rebuild, while the club management and supporters have a responsibility to ensure the fixture proceeds safely and without incident.
Two Teams, Two Paths
Persija and Persib find themselves at very different stages of their preparation. Persija are still laying the foundations of their new squad, while Persib are fine-tuning already established match sharpness through friendly fixtures and the Dewata Challenge series.
None of this pre-season form guarantees anything once the league begins. Over the course of a long Super League campaign, a team's strength will not be judged by one single match. Instead it will be decided by their ability to maintain performance levels and consistently pick up points right through the toughest phases of the season.
The upcoming meeting at GBK will be an early benchmark, not a final verdict on which team is better. What will matter most is what comes afterwards: which side can sustain their level of play, keep collecting wins, and remain at the top of the table right until the end of the campaign.
A single victory can build momentum. But it is consistency across an entire season that makes a champion.
