Indonesian men's singles shuttler Alwi Farhan advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating host India's representative Ayush Shetty in the Round of 16 at the 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Jonatan Christie saw his tournament run come to an end following defeat against Rasmus Gemke.

Alwi claimed a straight games victory with scores of 21-19, 21-11. This result makes him the sole remaining Indonesian representative in the men's singles draw following Jonatan's elimination in the round of 16.

"I am very happy to get this win, and this also avenges my previous loss against him. We have reached the quarter-finals now, but there are still matches ahead of us," Alwi stated in an official release from PP PBSI.

This victory brings Alwi significantly closer to a medal opportunity. One additional win in the quarter-final round will guarantee him a championship medal.

"This is quite a delicate situation, there is a real chance to win a medal right now, but I will not let my own expectations become a burden," he said.

Alwi Manages Home Crowd Pressure

Competing against an Indian player in front of the New Delhi home crowd was never going to be easy. Ayush received full vocal support from the spectators, particularly during the opening game.

Alwi held firm under the pressure and closed out the first game 21-19. From that point onwards, the 21-year-old's gameplay became far more consistent and controlled.

In the second game, Alwi took full command of the match and restricted Ayush to just 11 points.

"I understood he would feel the pressure playing on home soil, that kind of situation is never easy. I have been in that exact position before. That is why I tried to use that dynamic to lift my own spirit and take control of the match," he explained.

The overwhelming crowd support for Ayush also did not break Alwi's concentration at any point.

Next up, Alwi will face Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen in the quarter-final stage.

Chou secured his spot earlier after defeating Japan's Yushi Tanaka in straight games, 21-14, 21-9.

Jonatan Christie Unable To Sustain Momentum

Jonatan Christie has been eliminated from the 2026 BWF World Championships. The third seed fell to Denmark's Rasmus Gemke in a three-game battle, with the final score ending 21-11, 13-21, 18-21.

Jonatan actually started the match very strongly, taking the opening game convincingly 21-11 before he lost his rhythm and momentum in the second game.

"After winning the first game, my playing tempo dropped slightly and he was able to capitalise on that opening. This will be important material for me to evaluate and reflect on properly," Jonatan said in the official PBSI statement.

Entering the deciding final game, Jonatan attempted to recover his match rhythm, however Gemke also lifted his intensity and maintained constant pressure.

"At the start of the third game I tried to get my rhythm back, but he also raised his tempo. That situation really put me under pressure," he added.

Jonatan was ultimately unable to turn the match around, as Gemke closed out the third game 21-18.
